A sandy beach, palm trees, and a man-made reef just off shore make Peanut Island Park a worthy attraction--but it's the 1960s bomb shelter supposedly built for President John F. Kennedy that remains the island's real draw for out-of-towners. Check out the bunker before choosing some of the other numerous activities available here. Take to the 2 km (1.25 mi) walking path that rings the island, and detour out on the reef boardwalk, which extends 85 m (280 ft) over the water and provides a chance to see manatees. If you have your snorkeling gear, swim around the artificial reef in the lagoon to spot angelfish, damselfish, parrotfish, and crabs. At the maritime hammock on the island's west side, watch for osprey, brown pelicans, and white ibis. The island has numerous first-come, first-served picnic facilities--some with grills--so bring your lunch if you want.
