Visit Melrose Abbey, the ruins of a Gothic abbey built in 1146, for an atmospheric reminder of medieval times. Originally the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland, the English attacked repeatedly and eventually destroyed it in the 1500s. The ruins are renowned for the intricately sculptured motifs on the remaining walls. Most are typical religious icons such as demons and angels, but don’t miss the bagpipe-playing pig. Visit the museum inside with artifacts found during restoration of the site. Use the free audio guide and find the marker on the lawn where they buried the embalmed heart of legendary Scottish warrior-king Robert the Bruce. Bundle up for visits during colder months. Melrose Abbey is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

Melrose Abbey Reviews
This was a beautiful abbey! A lot a history here but if you don't care about that then go for the carvings (Dragons, saints, flowers and more). When you go, look out for the carving by a master mason.... more »
We took the train down from Edinburgh, and were so glad we did. It's an amazing site, as much of the original abbey is intact and you get a sense of how beautiful it was when it was in use centuries.... more »
Great site in the heart of the town, next to parking, large grounds with audio guide, story boards. Split into two parts by a walled road, there is a gate to get through to the museum and the rest of the site, be sure to visit the museum as it has lots of exhibits and more interesting information about the area. Go up the tower for the view too, it’s not too high but gives a good view all around.
Lovely red stone ruins. Audio guide available. Informative display boards. Great views from the tower. Well cared for site. Interesting museum.
