Visit Melrose Abbey, the ruins of a Gothic abbey built in 1146, for an atmospheric reminder of medieval times. Originally the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland, the English attacked repeatedly and eventually destroyed it in the 1500s. The ruins are renowned for the intricately sculptured motifs on the remaining walls. Most are typical religious icons such as demons and angels, but don’t miss the bagpipe-playing pig. Visit the museum inside with artifacts found during restoration of the site. Use the free audio guide and find the marker on the lawn where they buried the embalmed heart of legendary Scottish warrior-king Robert the Bruce. Bundle up for visits during colder months. Melrose Abbey is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Melrose Edition.

It was very interesting the differences between the individual monastic communities, their way of working, to learn their behavior to the mortals. Lovely place to visit, peaceful and tons of history. Only £15 for two adults and a child.... My baby son was free. Parking just across the road was only £1.40 for 4 hours. Highly recommended
Beautiful even in the rain! Paid £6 to enter, wasn’t sure if it gained access to the museum as well as it looked closed off. Would ask the host next time!
