Lindisfarne Priory stands as a tidal island that becomes cut-off from England twice a day. A quaint location with a tiny population of 160 people, the island contains natural wonder and a rich, if not bloody history. "The Holy Island of Lindisfarne" survived a bloodthirsty and murderous attack on the monastery from the Vikings in 793 CE. If you like nature and serenity, spend some time walking, bird-watching, or fishing in the remote northern part of the island. If you prefer religion, history, or the arts, visit the monastery and the 16th-century castle, both of which are located on the southern part of the island. Remember to check the tides before you access the island, especially if you intend to visit for only one day. Lindisfarne Priory reviews
I visited here with my husband. The place is very well set out with Covid restrictions. We went round the museum first, which was very informative. After that we went around the priory itself... more »
Historic site that is well wort a visit. The museum is informative, telling the history of St Cuthbert, St Aiden and the Vikings that first landed in 793. Not a lot left of the Priory, but the ruins..... more »
A magnificent ruined priory in a beautiful setting. I spent about an hour just wandering around and got a real sense of both its importance as a centre of early Christianity and its remoteness. The evocative ruins with their soaring arches and huge empty windows gave me a vivid impression of how grand the church must have been. You can still see some of the original decorated stonework. I also enjoyed discovering what remains of the monks' quarters, refectory, kitchen and outbuildings. All of them are clearly labelled with information boards and artist's impressions providing a good insight into how the monks lived. The ruins cover a large area but it's a fairly easy walk on grass with a few steps and access ramps. The little museum is well worth a visit and there's a lovely gift shop. An unforgettable experience!
If you have any interest at all in early British monastic history then you just have to visit Lindisfarne and the Priory. Utterly fabulous to wander around and soak up the atmosphere. Visitor centre has well curated display. Beware the need to cross the causeway safely. Utterly magical experience. Very highly recommended if such places are your thing.
