The Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow

#2 of 49 in Shopping in Glasgow
Responsible for educating some of Scotland's leading contemporary artists, The Glasgow School of Art is also listed as one of the top-ten architecture schools in the world. Appropriately, the school's campus is an architectural marvel, which visitors tour at an appointed time with a guide. The campus' central building, the Mackintosh, is the only building open to the public and houses a gallery that exhibits renowned contemporary artwork. Also known as the Mackintosh Museum, it is one of Glasgow's most popular cultural sites. If you're in town during the Degree Show, you can visit all the studios in the Mackintosh building and see the graduating year's final projects. • In the summer of 2019, you can only look at scaffolding here again. Because in 2018, architect Mackintosh's Art Nouveau icon burned down for the second time, the last time there was a devastating fire in 2014, when the building was rebuilt. Where was the fire protection after the reconstruction in 2014? Those responsible must ask themselves this question. Here Mackintosh and his contemporaries studied, here they gave Art Nouveau a very special, personal Scottish touch.

  • the reclamation work following the fire is not complete but... at the Glasgow school of art every year there is an exhibition of free access (around the date of 1 June) of end-of-year work in various fields: contemporary jewellery, weaving, styling, everyday technological projects, architecture! A pure treat... not to be missed

  • I had a tour which was just under an hour. Was very cheep, and was definitely worth it
  • What a waste of public funds painstakingly restoring it. The money could be better spent on I dunno maybe the NHS, food banks, the homeless. I think we should be solving our social and health problems in this country before spending money on nice things for tourists and the rich. Thats the whole problem with Scotland. Were like children. Any money we get we hit the toy shop.
