National Museum of Scotland combines one museum on Scottish antiquities, culture, and history and another on technology, natural history, and world cultures to create one of Britain's best facilities for learning and discovery. The overall collection is vast, so look at a map before visiting and choose the galleries you most want to see. A few of the many highlights include a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, a mummy mask, and numerous objects that once belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots. Entrance to the museum is free, and you can check items in the cloakroom for a small fee. Check the daily schedule of free themed tours before visiting to see if any interest you. The Museum Brasserie and the Balcony Cafe both serve food and drink. Before you visit Edinburgh, use our trip planner to discover what you can do and see there.

Absolutely brilliant museum. My little boys loved it. The wealth of information is massive. The exhibits are well displayed and easily accessible even with a push chair. Really worth a visit. Being free it makes sense to visit a few times to take it all in. Definitely make a contribution to the upkeep. Its awesome.
A great place to visit! You have kids? There is lots to do - many interactive stations, videos and fun stuff all over. A lot of floor space devoted to Scotland and its history. Very enjoyable. And, it is free!
