Holyrood Park, Edinburgh

4.7
#5 of 31 in Parks in Edinburgh
A royal park in the center of Edinburgh, Holyrood Park is the best place to get an overview of the Scottish city. Just 1.6 km (1 mi) from Edinburgh Castle, the park features hills, lochs, glens, and basalt cliffs that were once part of the royal deer-hunting grounds. Walking trails etch the park: Follow one up to the highest point in Edinburgh, Arthur's Seat. The seat rises 251 m (823 ft) over the city and provides a breath-taking view. Nestled between the hills is St. Margaret's Loch, where ducks, geese, and swans float. Nearby stand the ruins of an Augustinian abbey that was in use until the 16th century. You'll also find a cairn, a man-made stone pile, that commemorates the murder of a long-suffering wife and a chapel with mysterious origins. Holyrood Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Edinburgh Edition.

  • Great place for a family walk. The peak is high enough to make it feel like a bit of a challenge without being too hard. You can get all the way round the loop in a couple of hours without pushing too hard (we even stopped for lunch). We took a clockwise route from the car park at Holyrood palace which meant we came down the steepest part of the hill rather than go up it which suited the kids a bit better.
  • I would definitely recommend the Holyrood Park area among others for those who would like to explore the outdoors in Edinburgh. My wife, a friend, and I enjoyed the challenge of braving the strong Christmas winds to hike up “Arthur’s Seat.” At the top, you would have thought the winds would throw us off. We did not succeed at taking great photos.
