A major monument of Scottish heritage and one of the world's most striking fortresses, Edinburgh Castle dominates the city's skyline. Sitting atop a large volcanic rock, the castle dates back to the 12th century. It served as the seat of Scottish royalty until the 17th century, when it became a military barracks. Today, the castle holds the Scottish crown jewels, three military museums, and a handful of exhibits. Guided tours included in the price of admission offer the most efficient and informative way to visit the castle. You'll hear highlights from its history and understand the significance of its various buildings and artifacts. After your tour, sit for tea in one of the complex's tearooms and enjoy a traditional Scottish meal in the Redcoat Cafe. Try to secure your tickets before visiting the castle to avoid waiting in line at the entrance. Edinburgh Castle Reviews
Absolutely a MUST. Gorgeous grounds, wonderfully kept. A little windy and maybe some difficulty for those with special needs in regards to lifts, but I wouldn’t leave Edinburgh without visiting. more »
We visited on the 2nd of January so full of people by the time we were leaving. It is definitely worth seeing when in Edinburgh- although not as spectacular as one may have thought. It is well looked.... more »
Amazing place, what can I say but, make the time to visit the Castle, it is the most attacked Castle in history according to the Ghost tours guide, so much of it has been preserved, bit disappointed to see some buildings with modern interiors, but they could all be new and made to look old for all I know. I love History, mad keen on seeing as much and reading as much as I can about it, be prepared to take a lot of photos. You can also get some pretty epic shots from other parts of the city on either side of it, the place is immense, do yourself a favour and get a ticket,£19 ain't too shabby, and the rest of the city, just feels downright old, you know the feeling, you can just feel the history walking around, Edinburgh is exactly that.
Edinburgh castle is the epitome of Scottish history. There are many buildings and hundreds of years of Scottish history to keep you busy for hours. A great place to learn about Mary, the Queen of the Scots and also the Jacobite uprising. The views of Edinburgh are spectacular. Recommend going on one of the free tours that last about half an hour and give you a good start. Also, the Official Souvenir Guide gives good highlights of all the important places in the castle. If you are interested in Scottish history it is well the visit, but give yourself a number of hours so you are not rushed.
