When you arrive in tiny San Simeon, which lies halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, you can see why William Randolph Hearst chose this coastal locale for his famous hilltop castle.
On the 24th (Thu), look for all kinds of wild species at Friends of the Elephant Seal Visitor Center and Gift Shop, then stop by Sebastian General Store, then explore the historical opulence of Hearst Castle, and finally take some stellar pictures from Ragged Point. On the 25th (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: stroll through Piedras Blancas and then immerse yourself in nature at Montana de Oro State Park.

San Francisco to San Simeon is an approximately 4.5-hour car ride. You can also do a combination of train and taxi; or do a combination of bus and car. Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply called Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Step out of Carmel to go to Santa Cruz and see Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, which is approximately 58 minutes away. There's still lots to do: admire the majestic nature at Point Lobos, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Monterey Bay Aquarium, take a leisurely stroll along Old Fisherman's Wharf, and get to know the fascinating history of Pacific Grove Oceanview Boulevard.

You can drive from San Simeon to Carmel in 2 hours. Another option is to do a combination of taxi, train, and bus. While traveling from San Simeon, expect little chillier days and somewhat warmer nights in Carmel, ranging from highs of 65°F to lows of 47°F.
