The centerpiece of the city and one of only three High Gothic cathedrals in the country, Catedral Primada was constructed using white limestone brought here from numerous quarries in the surrounding area. For many visitors, the highlight is the sacristy, with its impressive gallery packed with paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Titian, Rafael, Zurbarán, and Velázquez. Begun in 1226 on the site of an ancient mosque, the imposing building was modeled after the Bourges Cathedral in France. Its monumental interior features heavy columns dividing the space into five naves, with several side chapels containing exquisite gold reliefs, huge oil paintings, and portraits of cardinals going back at least 500 years. Photography is strictly forbidden inside, though you can access the bell tower to snap a few shots of the historic city center. A very interesting place with a lot of information provided, well managed and kept updated. The cost of entry is worth every penny and if you are in Toledo you should definitely not miss this. And I'm not really a big fan of churches and cathedrals now after seeing so many around Europe.

A bit confusing to find the entrance, but well worth walking w the perimeter for. Buy your entrancetickets at the cathedral gift shop, and enter across the street. The inside is beautiful, with lots to see and explore. Do t forget to ask about the tapestry museum (included w/ admission)located a few blocks away... We actually missed that part, but heard it's worth seeing. Also, inside the cathedral, there w free magazines with lots of information about the building and architecture, etc. Printed in both English and Spanish, with a section for kids too.
