Meet African penguins at Boulders Beach Penguin Colony, a series of sandy coves separated by granite rocks. Part of Table Mountain National Park, the beach has had an influx of visitors since 1982, when the colony of penguins was formed. Hanging out on the picturesque beach, you can observe the charming animals at close range or snap a few memorable photos. If you come on a warm day, try swimming alongside the penguins, but resist the urge to reach out and touch them--though not considered dangerous, these animals are wild and could become agitate if you invade their privacy. • African penguins, once in danger of extinction, are numerous here and encroach far beyond the beautiful white beach of Boulders so much so that it is very easy to meet them even a short distance from the car park. Beautiful but comical in their paw on land, quite another thing just touch the sea water....

  • We were at the Boulders Beach Penguin Colony towards the evening and therefore spared from huge tourist flows. A visit at off-peak times is definitely worthwhile. The visit costs 160 ZAR (adults) - even those who only want to go to the beach have to pay admission. It is very impressive to see and observe so many penguins in one place. Annoying, however, are the tourists, who do not follow the rules and try to caress the penguins - despite clear signs. Here the operator of the penguin colony would like to take a stronger grip and put such visitors in front of the door! If you are a little attentive, you may also see one of the many Clippers who romp around in the underbush.
