Along a coastline of natural beaches, discover Fortaleza de Sagres, a historical site featuring a great fortress, impressive plants, and wildlife. Henry the Navigator launched his expeditions from this site in the 1400s, beginning the Portuguese Age of Discoveries. Henry built a chapel next to his home in 1459 that was replaced with the Nossa Senhora da Graca church in 1579. The magnificent fortress was built to defend the region from North African raiders in the 16th century. Though the 1755 earthquake destroyed portions of the structures, they have undergone extensive renovations since. Fantastic - don't miss it! Ramparts of fort are impressive, but best is the walk around the enclosed headland inside - great natural flora with just enough information boards. The sink holes are fantastic - sounds from the sea caves rush up to the surface.

Lovely scenery and history attached to the Fortress. Bring good walking shoes surface uneven in places. Nice places to stop to have food and a drink. Well worth a visit. Watch the weather it can get cool all depending what time of the year.
