Chinese Cemetery, Manila

Cemetery · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
See the final resting place of Chinese citizens buried during the period of Spanish colonization at Chinese Cemetery. As the Chinese people were forbidden from burying their loved ones in Catholic cemeteries during this time, the community had to build their own cemeteries. Wander through the city's second oldest cemetery, which looks like a town, with streets, named walkways, and tombs built to look like homes. Some of the tombs even have air-conditioning, bathrooms, and security guards. • It's like your visiting a city, the tombs have photos, incense, flowers. It's somber, but very moving. Out of the way, but worth the trip.  more »
  • Interesting concept but in my opinion nothing special. The neighborhood (from south gate) is pretty rough and creepy. My visit was very quick.  more »

  • Pretty unique in the sense that there are hardly shared lots for resting places here. There are mostly mausoleums. Lots of old chinese families have their mausoleums built here and most are bigger than apartment units. Some even have two storeys and bathrooms. The cemetery also houses a lot of caretakers and their families as well because of the underground economy of maintaining the mausoleums. The atmosphere is pretty laid back here and is conducive for strolling.
  • Fascinating cemetery but it would be good to have a local guide/more signage to explain the history behind it. Watch out for wild dogs.
