See some of the highest sand dunes in the world at Deadvlei, one of the most arid yet remarkably picturesque landscapes on the continent. As you reach the barren clay pan, notice that only a few skeletons of trees stand above the dry earth, while only a few species of plants survive off the dawn mist and extremely rare rainfalls. During your visit, wear a hat or sunscreen and always carry extra water. The Deadvlei is a white clay plain near the Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The Deadvlei is surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world, the highest of which is 300 to 400 meters high. When the climate changed, the area was plagued by drought. Sand dunes surrounded the plains, which blocked the water flow of the river. Because too little water came to the trees, they died. The remaining skeletons of the trees are blacked by the sun. Although they are not petrifying, they do not go through because it is too dry.View original -
