Deadvlei, Sossusvlei

#1 of 75 in Wildlife in Namibia
See some of the highest sand dunes in the world at Deadvlei, one of the most arid yet remarkably picturesque landscapes on the continent. As you reach the barren clay pan, notice that only a few skeletons of trees stand above the dry earth, while only a few species of plants survive off the dawn mist and extremely rare rainfalls. During your visit, wear a hat or sunscreen and always carry extra water. • We had planned to go there at sunrise, but a setback meant that we went there in the early afternoon. Result: no one! At one point we were actually alone on the lake. The place is amazing and very easy to get to. The colours of the sky, sand, soil and trees are such that you can hardly believe it is natural. Despite our 4x4 we didn't want to take the risk of getting slit. The shuttles do the job very well.

  • Most beautiful, and heaviest route is the Big Daddy climb! From the flanks and top stunning views of Death Valley. Image Salt Plain in Bolivia. You can then in spectacular way from top, or lower from the flanks walk steeply down to the valley! This then easy to walk lengthwise with Ah end beautiful panorama petrifying trees. Hence easy to walk back to shuttle

  • This is truly a special experience in my life. It is a must do. I wont ever forget it. Eerily beautiful, and captivating with the towering sand dunes in the background and 900 year old tree's in the foreground that cannot decompose. Easily accessible and do-able in one day. If you plan on climbing big daddy be prepared. On a windy day the sand hits you like tiny hot bullets which was painful. Wear long pants or a shirt. And the sand can get into your eyes as well. But this was on a really windy day. Wear proper shoes as well, and socks that you will never use again.
  • Crazy colour contrasts (blue, red, white, dark brown/black). Absolutely stunning. Gets hot, make sure you have a hat and water. Earlier the better.
