Madakaripura Waterfall, Probolinggo

Must see · Waterfall · Nature / Park
One of the tallest falls in Indonesia, Madakaripura Waterfall tumbles into a vast grotto. To reach this location, hike through a deep valley, crossing rocky terrain and passing through a narrow chasm, into which a steady rain of small cascades descends. Exit the chasm and find yourself in a huge natural hollow, open at the top, with moss-covered rock faces towering above you. The main waterfall plunges into this chamber, creating a large plunge pool, ideal for taking a dip. You will inevitably get wet visiting this waterfall, so bring a raincoat or an umbrella. You can also buy disposable ponchos and plastic bags for your valuables at stalls along the trekking path. • Nice waterfall to visit but the experience was spoiled by the local mafia at a ‘barrier’. We rented a grab taxi for 4 hours (300k) from Probolinggo to take us to the waterfall. Upon arrival there...  more »
  • You will have to take a motorbike ride to the entrance and walked roughly about 2km to reach the waterfall. There are locals/food stalls selling waterproof bags and raincoats along the way. This...  more »

  • I would like to give a six star but I can’t. Absolutely wonderful spot which you can walk so close to the waterfall. Beautiful!
  • TL;DR: don't get a local guide, don't tip, or you'll be feeding an aggressive mafia. But do go, it's beautiful. The place is super beautiful. Very worthwhile the short hike. But be advised, there's a mafia of "local guides" and motorbike-taxi that can ruin the experience. Local guides are unneeded, and will charge you 100k upfront and will try to get more money asking for tips aggressively or saying that the price was higher. We were proposed local guides like 10 times. Just ignore them and if they start following you, tell them you are not going to pay them. The path the motorbikes take you through is a short one, very walkable and I personally think it's nice. Motorbike will be faster if you are short on time. They were 10k rupees per traject, so 20k return. When returning, my driver said that because I'm fat, it was double the price, and tried to get tips very aggressively. You need to pay a 21k rupees entrance fee but that looked official and they refused to cooperate with the mafia by giving you change.
