Butte de Vauquois reviews
One of the most striking places of the WW1 battleground to visit. The hill where the village of Vauquois used to be was turned into huge craters by mine warfare. Between 1915 and 1918 over 500 mines..... more »

Wow absolutely must see World War 1 sight to see. If you are nearby definitely make a journey here - reserve 2 hours to see it. Start by going left uphill from parking lot to German trenches - in very good condition! Be wary of rusted barbed wire! The trenches were built to include the building basements and you can see some of them going down. Bring a torch with you as you can enter some of the mines even without guide (at least may 2019. In the middle of the hill you can see the many craters that were exploded (550-600 mines were expoded). In the middle of the ex - hill you can find one single gravestone where the village church used to stand - that is the only thing left of that churchyard. You can also find a trench mortar and restored pit from where they used to shoot those. On the French side you can enter at least one longer tunnel winding down, seems to be cleared and opened (may 2019) and feels like safe to enter. They seem to be excavating more tunnels and with a guide I suppose you can go through many more. There are also some old farming tools to see from the Vauquois village.
Extremely impressive World War 1 site. The trench lines and bunkers are still in tact although you can not go in some of them. Walking the trench line is an experience all in itself and is truly amazing to see that such a place still exist. This is a must if your are in the Verdun area.
