Reims is home to Champagne--the most celebrated and celebratory wine in the world. It is also the city that hosted the coronation of French kings for over thousand years. World War I strikes destroyed most of the historic old houses, which the inhabitants rebuilt extensively during the 1920s in an Art Deco style. Many of the largest champagne-producing houses, known as les grandes marques, have their headquarters in Reims and are open to you for tastings and tours. Champagne ages in the hundreds of miles of caves and tunnels below the city. Carved from chalk, some of these passages date back to Roman times. The city center is fairly small with many pedestrians-only streets, making it easy to walk the entire shopping area.
